For farmers and contractors facing ever-rising fuel prices and pressure to cut emissions, achieving maximum efficiency from the diesel engines of tractors and other large self-propelled machinery is an increasingly high priority.
Lynx Engineering is the sole UK importer of Eggers dynamometers from Germany-based KL Maschinenbau, specialists in the manufacture of dynamometers for agricultural machinery. With Eggers technology from Lynx, the engine performance of machines ranging from small to medium size tractors up to some of the world’s biggest harvesters and tractors can be accurately tested.
The most powerful models in the Lynx dyno range are the road-going Eggers 735 KW PT 501 G dynamometer and the fixed workshop version, the PT 501 G+. Capable of accurately measuring and verifying the torque, power and performance of engines up to 1000hp, the PT 501 is one of the most powerful dynamometers of its type in the UK.
As with other units in the Eggers range, the PT 501 G series measures torque and rotational speed separately. The generator, which is used to load the engine, incorporates a hub to measure torque and a speed sensor to record revolutions per minute. From these precisely measured values, the control electronics calculate the performance of the engine under test against the specified power profile.
To achieve a high endurance load, the PT 501 G series features an electric generator which is used as braking medium. The generated electricity is converted into heat by means of heavily dimensioned high-power resistors. The very high continuous braking power of the dynamometer remains constant and does not decrease at all.

Because the generator is used as a braking medium with the sole task of loading the engine and not for power measurement, any potential inaccuracies such as constantly changing efficiencies of the generator are eliminated. Like all other Eggers dynamometers, the PT 501 G series is quickly and easily calibrated. The dynamometer can also be shut down immediately after the test without the need for after-cooling.
The 600 kW Eggers PT 302 units are designed for testing engines up to a maximum of 462hp for full-load curve testing and 816hp for rapid testing – still more than enough power to test most tractors and harvesters.
This range offers high braking performance and, with three models to choose from, the versatility to deliver the dyno that best suits your needs. Those choices include the PT 302 S mobile road-going unit, the PT 302 W fixed workshop unit and the PT 302 M mobile workshop variant.
PT 302 units are available with the Eggers Touch Control touchscreen device which allows all essential test bench functions to be operated simply and precisely from a robust, compact handheld unit.
For those looking for a more compact solution for testing tractors, the Eggers 300 kW PT 170 fits the bill perfectly. Available as both a mobile workshop unit (PT 170 E) or a trailer mounted road-going version (PT 170 SE), this dynamometer boasts an impressive performance range of up to 400hp (300 kW) for a rapid test and 225hp (170 kW) for a full-load curve – enough to cover the majority of tractors on the market.
At just 900mm long x 1000mm wide x 1500mm high for the PT 170 E, this is a dynamometer that measures up to the requirements of workshops with limited spare space. Both PT 170 models are also available with the Eggers Touch Control handheld touchscreen device, as shown in the image.
Available with selected dynamometers, the new EGGERS Touch Control combines the latest control and display technology in a compact, robust handheld unit. All key test bench functions can be operated simply and precisely via the bright, high-contrast touch-screen display.
Load control remains via the proven ergonomic rotary knob, combining modern operation with its familiar tactile precision. Other features include diesel engine-optimised speed and torque control, automatic zero-point adjustment for reliable measurements, cooling time calculation and display for efficient test cycles, plus clear visualisation of operating status and target values directly on the screen. Diagnostic functions and error message display allow for fast service support.
Touch Control is supplied as standard with a USB interface but wireless connection can also be specified as an option.
Dealers across the UK can either book dyno tests to be conducted by a Lynx technician on the dealer’s premises, or
dynamometers can be purchased through Lynx and, if necessary, supported with training.
